River Diversion Dam The
Pennsylvania Power and Light Company (PP&L) of Allentown, Pennsylvania,
is applying for permits from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the Montana
Department of Environmental Quality, the Yellowstone River Soil and
Water Conservation District and the Yellowstone County Flood Plain Program
to place 8-foot long, 5-foot high triangular concrete blocks, end to
end, to form a 272-foot long dam across the west channel of the Yellowstone
River near Billings. The dam would divert the river into its power plant
depends. PP&L announced that continual low flows in the river could
leave its coal-fired, 160 megawatt Corrette power plant without water
critical to cooling the steam that helps generate electricity at the
riverside plant. The
applications were rejected and other less destructive alternatives
have
been installed. ~ |
