Smart Water Use

All across Montana urban water use is steeply growing in line with the demands of exploding town populations. Growing urban water demand is stressing natural stream systems and endangering water-dependent species. The Bitterroot, Gallatin and Lower Yellowstone Rivers have diminishing flows and water quality which harms aquatic species. On the increase is also outdoor water use, e.g. for landscape irrigation and car washing. Xeriscape - the use of drought-tolerant native vegetation for landscaping is beautiful and more appropriate than Kentucky blue grass. Rather than watering heavily, we can be smart about when and how much we water, avoiding hot and windy days and meeting the needs of our vegetation.

Water should be billed with an increasing block rate, charging more as a customer uses more, a strategy for lowest per capita water use. This way water wasters would be billed a fair price for their habit. ~
